If you travel inAthens, against popular belief, I would highly recommend saving the Acropolis for your secondday. As attractive as it is to head straight to the most famous building in the city, there are several reasons why you should hold off until later.Sunriseis the best time to see the ruins, and who wants to spend their first day in anew citywaking up at6 a.m.? On top of that, the Acropolis is going to make every other site inAthensless important in comparison, so I recommend not hitting it on your first day.
We got to the southeast gate at 7:30, half an hour before it opened at 8. When the gate opened, we rushed to the hill. Our plan paid off because we had the whole complex to ourselves for five minutes. In this age of overtourism, getting to the greatness of the Acropolis with nobody else around felt special and excited.
The Acropolis is the name given to the complex on top of the hill, and it’s made up of several buildings. There’s theTempleofAthena Nike, the Parthenon, the Old Temple of Athena, the Legendary Olive Tree of the Pandroseion, the Porch of the Caryatids at the Erechtheion... and on your way down, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
Something that sounds boring but isn’t is theAcropolisMuseum, and I recommend spending a couple of hours there. As someone who is a museum-avoider, I listened to the recommendations of everyone who had been, and made myself go inside. And I loved it. The museum houses tons of sculptures unearthed from the Acropolis, and it was interesting to check them out.
Head toSyntagma Squarenext to watch the changing of the guard. This takes place every hour on the hour, so try to time your visit perfectly. The guards wear fun clothes and make for interesting photos. 4. The author suggests visiting the Acropolis on the second day so that ___________. A. it can save visitors a lot of time B. it can save visitors from getting up early
C. it can make for a better travel experience D. it can give visitors a better understanding ofAthens 5. How did the author feel when he ran to the top of the hill?
A. Bored. B. Worried. C. Relaxed. D. Amazed. 6. With what may the author agree about theAcropolisMuseum?
A. It is so great that it should be visited last. B. It is enjoyable and worth visiting. C. It wastes a lot of time. D. It should be avoided. 7. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To provide some advice on visiting the Acropolis. B. To introduce the history of the Acropolis. C. To call on people to protect historic sites. D. To encourage people to travel around.

Kenyan mother Beth Mwende heard her sleeping child cry out, but did not worry after the three-year-old quickly quietened down. The next morning, however, she found her daughter, Mercy, nearly unconscious with two bite marks in the neck. “I didn’t know that it was a snake,” Mwende said.
Although snakebites are common in her hometown, antivenom medication is difficult to get. Mwende lives about 160 kilometers east of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital. So she took her daughter to a traditional healer. He placed stones over the bites. Mercy died within hours. She was one of about 700 Kenyans killed by snakebites each year, notes a report in the scientific publicationToxicon.
The Kenya Snakebite Research and Intervention Center (KSRIC) is working to change that. The KSRIC hopes to have East Africa’s first antivenom medication on the market within five years. It estimates the cost will be about 30 percent of an imported product, which often sells for about US $ 30.
More than 70, 000 people are bitten in East Africa each year. Climate change and deforestation are worsening the problem as snakes get pushed out of natural surroundings into populated areas.
Nearly 100 snakes live at the research center in a forest near Nairobi. Researchers take venom from snakes and study it before injecting small amounts into other animals, such as sheep. The animals then create antibodies that can be made into antivenom.
“Up to now, no one has made any kind of antivenom in Kenya,’’ said Geoffrey Maranga Kepha, a senior snake handler.
Two effective antivenoms are available in Kenya, from India and Mexico, the center says.
The center is teaching communities that using antivenom immediately after receiving a snakebite can save lives, said head researcher George Adinoh.
“After seeing how people died in Kenya from snakebites I decided to devote my life to coming up with a rescue measure that will help or prevent people from dying from snakebites,” snake handler Kepha added. 8. How does the author introduce the topic of the text? A. By telling a story. B. By listing figures.
C. By referririg to documents. D. By making a comparison. 9. Why did Mwende take her daughter to a traditional healer? A. She couldn’t afford any modern treatment.
B. She lived where antivenom medication is not available. C. The traditional way is very effective to treat snakebites. D. She believed a traditional healer could cure her daughter. 10. What is causing more snakebites to happen in East Africa? A. Lack of antivenom medication.
B. Environmental damage and climate change. C. People’s low awareness of the danger of snakes. D. People’s pursuit of traditional cures for snakebites.
11. What do we know about antivenom in Kenya from the text? A. Itis taken from antibodies of sheep.
B. There is only one effective antivenom available. C. KSRIC is trying to develop a local antivenom now.
D. People refuse to use antivenom after being bitten by snakes.

Concerns about health, animals and the environment are leading more people to remove meat from their diet. Plant-based meat alternatives (替代品) increasingly appear in supermarkets and restaurants. But what some people call clean meat-meat grown from cells in a laboratory—is still an idea that is just beginning.
More than 24 companies are testing lab-grown fish, beef and chicken. These businesses hope to enter the alternative meat market, which could be worth $140 billion by 2029. One of the companies, Shiok Meats, grows its product by taking shrimp cells and keeping them at a fixed temperature. They are then given nutrients in a
solution (溶液). The cells become meat in four to six weeks.
This lab-grown meat’s price is high. One kilogram of it now costs $5,000, said Shiok Meats’ chief executive Sandhya Sriram. At that cost, a single pork and shrimp dumpling could be as much as $300. Sriram, avegetarian, hopes to cut the cost to $50 for one kilogram by the end of this year. “We are looking at next year, so we might be the first ever company to launch a cell-based meat product in the world,” Sriram said. “Shiok Meats still needs approval from the city’s food regulator, and that matters the most at present.”
Although people increasingly demand meat alternatives, cell-based meat companies still faceresistance(抵制) to their products. In Singapore, some people said they would give lab grown meat a second thought. “I may not exactly dare to eat it, but I do find the idea appealing because the animals in the oceans are declining,” said 60-year-old Pet Loh, while sheshopped for shrimps in a Singapore market.
Any alternative way of making animal protein without harming the environment is positive, said Paul Teng, a specialist in agriculture technology at Nanyang Technological University. But, he added, more studies are needed to understand any negative result of making cellular protein. 12. Why are more people eating less meat? A. Because lab-grown meat has more nutrition. B. Because plant-based food is getting popular. C. Because meat in the market is increasingly expensive. D. Because health and the environment are their concerns.
13. What is the most important for Shiok Meats at present according to Sriram? A. Bringing down the price. B. Gaining consumers’ acceptance. C. Obtaining official permission. D. Getting ahead of other companies. 14. Which word best describes Pet Loh’s attitude towards lab-grown meat? A. Doubtful. B. Uncaring. C. Negative. D. Positive. 15. What is the text mainly about?
A. A new way to make a fortune. B. Negative results of lab-grown meat. C. New research findings on healthy diet. D. A meat alternative grown in labs. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
